Notably, NCR was the first to combine scanner and scale, the first to read and report bad bar codes with PACESETTER Plus software, and the first to address ergonomics and to revolutionize first-pass read performance with bi-optic scanners.

The NCR RealScan 7875 is built upon the success of the award-winning NCR RealScan 7870 scanner/scale. It was developed in response to the retailers' need to contain costs in the face of high employee turnover, lower productivity, and the constant demands of training new employees. Their goal was to make the NCR RealScan 7875 the simplest, easiest scanner for cashiers to learn and use.

What makes the NCR RealScan 7875 so easy to use?
The NCR RealScan 7875 is the most aggressive reading scanner NCR has ever offered. It provides superior performance under a variety of different operating conditions. The NCR RealScan 7875 features the latest scanning innovations, including:

Exclusive top-down read capability from the 6"-high vertical window so minimal orientation of products is needed. This unique feature makes it more comfortable for cashiers to use and makes the scanning process more efficient.

Larger 7" bottom window gives the NCR RealScan 7875 an increased scanning zone so that it can read bar codes on the first pass, and accommodate the varying scanning techniques of cashiers.

A second video channel creates a very dense scan zone, increases the depth of the field, and enables the scanner to read labels better.

Because of the dense scan zone, the NCR RealScan 7875 offers quick read capability when bar codes are presented to the vertical window of the scanner. This accommodates the scanning of hard-to-read items.

NCR's PACESETTER 3 software allows the NCR RealScan 7875 to make decisions about poor quality labels. In milliseconds, it can decode misprinted, wrinkled or damaged UPCs commonly found in the meat and deli departments. Called Adaptive Label Reconstruction, this feature recognizes and reconstructs the damaged label and provides the terminal with accurate bar code information so that the checkout process is not delayed.

The Scan Doctor, a state-of-the-art self-diagnostics system developed by NCR, performs a wellness check every time the scanner goes through a power cycle. If a failure has occurred, the Scan Doctor alerts the cashier through speech synthesis, announcing the failure and allowing service personnel to arrive prepared. It can even send a diagnosis to the terminal to communicate with host systems.

A clean-glass indicator lets the cashier immediately know when the scanner window has become too dirty to perform optimally. Optional voice activation is available.

Dual RS232 ports permit the addition of a handheld scanner or other peripherals to the check-stand configuration.

Cashier-side volume control enables cashiers to adjust the "good read" tone to accommodate varying in-store noise levels.

Hardware Advancements
The NCR RealScan 7875 is designed to fit into the counter hole required by most popular high-performance scanners. Check-stand modification is often unnecessary. The upper scanner housing is designed "retail rugged" to handle the weight of purses or elbows. Its height and angle accommodate check writing, eliminating the need for an extra piece of cabinetry. The NCR RealScan 7875 does not require check-stand ventilation, and all service and calibration can be accomplished without removing the Scanner/Scale from the check-stand. A soft power-down and Automatic Power-Up capability extend the life of the scanner without impacting operations.

Scanner glass is available with a Diamond or Sapphire Crystal surface, supplying a cost performance mix for all needs. The Diamond glass is customer-replaceable.

Software advancements
The NCR RealScan 7875 can simultaneously auto-discriminate between UPC/EAN/JAN, Code 3 of 9, Code 128, Interleaved 2 of 5, Extended Coupon Codes, and Periodical Add-On codes. The non-UPC codes are standard, but are disabled in the scanner. These codes can be activated and other scanner attributes can be programmed via bar code or download signal from the host device.

PACESETTER, a technology that easily reads labels of inferior quality, has been a familiar tool for NCR scanner users for many years. With the NCR RealScan 7875, this technology has been advanced.

PACESETTER Plus determines what is wrong with a label, corrects it, and sends the accurate data to the terminal. This feature allows you to keep track of the quantities of bad labels in your store. When commanded, the scanner will communicate which labels are inferior and send this data to the terminal. Different PACESETTER Plus modes of operation will allow you to isolate products with poor label quality.

The NCR RealScan 7875 introduces a new generation of decode algorithms known as PACESETTER 3. This software allows the NCR RealScan 7875 to decode misprinted UPCs, even those with common malfunctions (e.g., those with faulty thermal print heads). The feature called Adaptive Label Reconstruction will automatically correct the damaged label and provide the terminal with accurate bar code information, along with an optional indication that an in-store printer has failed.
