Rugged Palm -based Pocketable Computers with Wireless WAN Capability

Furthering its commitment to providing innovative solutions and data management tools for the evolving marketplace, Symbol Technologies has expanded its popular Palm-based SPT 1733 product family to offer wireless wide area network (WWAN) connectivity. Now in addition to one- and two-dimensional barcode data capture capabilities and wireless local area communications, the rugged SPT 1733 series offers secure, affordable, two-way wide area wireless access, giving new meaning to point-of-activity computing.

A Simple, Secure and Seamless Solution

The new wide area SPT 1733 devices will enable customers to not only collect and manage data anytime, anywhere, but also access the Internet and corporate LANs, send and receive e-mail, and communicate with remote host systems through wireless WAN access. The new wide area SPT 1733 product family supports popular Palm OS enterprise, productivity and synchronization software, giving users tremendous flexibility and bringing added value to their customized solutions.

The SPT 1733 houses Novatel's CDPD (Cellular Digital Packet Data) modem which uses Wireless IP Technology a secure, open standard network which offers reliable, real-time data transmission at speeds up to 19.2 Kbps.

By using wireless IP technology, the device will transmit small packets of secure data over existing phone networks. Only the amount of data that is sent and received is tracked, not the length of time connected to the Internet. This structure, combined with Symbol's attractive data plans, offers an efficient, affordable solution.

Based on GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications), a worldwide standard for digital wireless transmissions, the SPT 1734 features 900/1800 MHz Dual Band capabilities. This offers both SMS (Short Message Service) and real-time secure, circuit-switched data transmission at speeds up to 14.4 Kbps.

The SPT 1733 and SPT 1734 offer fast, seamless Internet connectivity; enabling efficient access to Web-based applications or corporate intranet data from anywhere wireless IP service is available.

As part of the Extreme Environments category of Symbol products, the SPT 1733 and SPT 1734 are sealed to IP54 standards for protection against windblown rain and dust, and are able to withstand multiple drops to concrete up to 4 ft./1.2 m. The combination of rugged durability and WWAN connectivity enables users to collect, manage and communicate data virtually anytime, anywhere.

Designed to be tough enough for use in manufacturing and industrial environments, the SPT 1733 and SPT 1734 also feature Symbol's state-of-the-art miniature scan engine.
